With a blizzard raging outside, it seemed like a good day to 1) feed our bird friends; and 2) photograph birds (through the window, of course!)
Thus, what follows is a sampling of photos from the past few snowy days.
A red-headed woodpecker picks out a sunflower heart
Why juncos are sometimes called snow birds.
This mourning dove probably wishes she’d migrated south with others of her species.
Yes, blue jays have big mouths and big appetites!
A chickadee back for another sunflower seed.
Bluebirds sometimes stay around in winter, especially if they can get water
Purple finches usually drift south to Iowa only in winter.
A tufted titmouse is poised for takeoff after a drink at a heated water bath.
Deer mice like sunflower hearts, too.
Too hungry to fight, normally feisty downy woodpeckers share a feeder.
Feathers fluffed against the cold, a cardinal rests between sunflower seed meals.
