Outstanding piece. Thanks for sharing! Many years ago I led three “Winter Ecology of the Boreal Forest” field trip classes through the Iowa State University Biology Program. These were week long winter camping trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. One of features we focused on was the “subnivean zone”. Great trips - and everyone lived…🙂👍
You have uncovered (pun intended) a mystery in my urban back yard in Toronto where the squirrels seem to be tunneling under the deep snow we got a week ago.

Nice. And that word. Subnivean. Never heard of it. A new layer opens for me. Thanks
Well, this old dog can learn something new today -- "Subnivean Zone". So cool (or actually, warm.)!
Nice job, Emily - and introduction to the Subnivean realm. Water is amazing stuff - in all its forms.
