A male rose-breasted grosbeak peeks out of the ironwood leaves - but his bubbly song and bright colors make it hard for him to hide!
Overwhelmed with the cascade of spring flowers, cacophanies of bird songs, a rapidly greening landscape, garden chores and just savoring May in Iowa, I decided to just share recent images, rather than write a blog. I hope you’re also savoring the season!
Columbine
Still gaunt from winter, a hungry deer samples grasses and forbs emerging from a recently burned prairie.
These two eaglets soon will leave their nest in a towering cottonwood tree along the Volga River near Osborne in Clayton County
Leaves of three! It’s not just wildflowers that are popping out right now. Beware the reddish-green, sharp-lobed leaves of poison ivy.
Purple martins have returned to this Clayton County farmyard. We hope they feast on the hordes of mosquitoes that soon will come out.
A mini-forest of pussytoes carpets our lawn where I haven’t the heart to mow off the pollinator-friendly blossoms. Painted lady butterflies love them.
Now tucked snuggly in thier nest box, these baby bluebirds may be flying in a couple of weeks.

A female orchard oriole and a male Baltimore oriole share a breakfast of grape jelly.
